What Is A Mommy Makeover?

Pregnancy takes an enormous toll on a woman’s body. Many changes occur while a baby develops within the uterus. The skin and tissue of the midsection stretch to provide room, resulting in significant anatomical changes. Though some areas will “snap back” to how they were previously, many will not. With a mommy makeover, patients can regain the confidence and contours of their pre-pregnancy body. A mommy makeover can involve the following procedures in any combination, but it almost always involves abdominoplasty and breast enhancement, because of the ways pregnancy affects these specific areas of the body.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

Dr. Korman performs breast lifts for women who experience breast ptosis (sagging) or notice a flatter or less symmetrical contour after pregnancy. Through an incision commonly spanning from the areola to the lower crease of the breast, skin is removed and the nipple is placed higher on the breast mound. This gives the breast a youthful and lifted look.

Breast Reduction

During a breast reduction, Dr. Korman will reduce the size of the breast by extracting excess skin, fat, and glandular tissue. This is for patients who are physically and psychologically uncomfortable with their current breasts and request a smaller and more manageable size.

Breast Augmentation (Mammoplasty)

If the patient is unhappy with the size of their breasts due to deflation, then Dr. Korman will suggest a breast augmentation. Using silicone or saline implants, like the mommy makeover as a whole, this portion is highly customizable, with regard to the type, size, projection, and placement of the implants. Dr. Korman will discuss the many options available at a personal consultation.

Liposuction

Liposuction is a procedure wherein Dr. Korman removes stubborn fat deposits using suction. Dr. Korman makes small incisions near the hidden near the targeted area, and then extracts fat cells through a tube called a cannula, Liposuction can be performed on many different areas of the body, including the abdomen, flanks, back, arms, and thighs.

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

In a typical tummy tuck, Dr. Korman will make an incision from hip to hip. Excess skin is then removed and the muscles and tissue are secured to create a toned and flat stomach. This can be a standard, extended, or mini tummy tuck depending on the patient and the amount of excess skin to be removed. During pregnancy, the abdominal muscles often stretch at the center to make more room in a condition known as diastasis recti. During a tummy tuck procedure, the surgeon can also suture these muscles back into place, restoring core strength. After a tummy tuck, the abdomen is tightened and contoured to restore the waist-to-hip ratio.

Buttock Augmentation

Dr. Korman also offers buttock augmentation procedures. This involves either the use of implants or fat transfer to enhance the shape and contouring of the lower figure. This procedure can complement the other alterations that the patient undergoes during a mommy makeover, but it can also make the healing process more challenging. Since the other typical procedures performed during this service are focused on the front of the body, it can be hard to heal those areas when the backside is also healing.

Labiaplasty

After a woman gives birth, it is not uncommon for the labia minora to change shape or positioning. A labiaplasty is a procedure that removes tissue from the labia minora for a more aesthetic and comfortable intimate area.

Inner Thigh Lift

An inner thigh lift is one of Dr. Korman’s specialties. Focusing on the sensitive inner thigh area, he will choose an incision location and method to tighten and smooth the skin between the legs for a firmer, more sculpted look. This procedure can be paired with any and all of those procedures mentioned above and is a great addition to a mommy makeover procedure.

Candidates For A Mommy Makeover

The patient is a good candidate for a mommy makeover if:

  • They are in good overall health
  • They are finished having children
  • They don’t plan on losing or gaining weight
  • They have realistic expectations of what the surgery can accomplish
  • They are able to take adequate time off to recover

A mommy makeover can be customized for anyone, whether they are a new mom, if they have had multiple children, or they are simply a person looking to turn back the clock on their figure.

Personal Consultation

At a consultation with Dr. Korman, patients are given all possible information and plan options to figure out which procedures can best help them meet their goals. The doctor will inform them of every feasible direction a mommy makeover can take.

Whether they are looking for just a breast augmentation and tummy tuck to tackle the areas they care the most about, or they are looking for “the works” that could include a breast augmentation and lift, tummy tuck, and liposuction, a highly personalized treatment plan is easily achievable.

Mommy Makeover Preparation

It is vital to prepare well for a mommy makeover and to follow Dr. Korman’s instructions carefully. To get ready for the chosen procedures, patients should:

  • Refrain from the use of tobacco products
  • Receive a physical examination from Dr. Korman
  • Inform us about their current medications
  • Inform us about any past surgeries
  • Pick up prescriptions ahead of time
  • Arrange a ride to and from our facility
  • Adequately prepare their home for recovery

Recovering From Multiple Procedures

After receiving a mommy makeover, patients may be required to wear tight wrapping to help with swelling. They may be fitted with drains to remove any fluids that can build up near the incision points. They will have to come back in to get those removed around one week later, during which time Dr. Korman will also inspect how well they are healing and whether follow-up procedures are necessary. This will also be a chance to make sure any recovery questions are answered. Recovery time is completely dependent on how many procedures are included in the mommy makeover, but the average initial recovery time for daily activities is 7-10 days. For more strenuous activities, recovery is around 4-6 weeks.

Corresponding & Complementary Procedures

Short Scar Facelift

After having a baby or going through weight fluctuations, the skin can stretch and then possibly sag when any weight is later lost. Dr. Korman offers a short incision facelift to help maintain a youthful visage. Also known as a “mini facelift,” this is a facial rejuvenation procedure that requires only short incisions as opposed to those created during a traditional facelift.

All incisions are carefully hidden within the hairline. This surgery can be added to a patient’s mommy makeover to tighten and smooth wrinkles and refresh the face. What Does A Mommy Makeover Involve?

A mommy makeover typically includes a combination of surgical procedures that target different areas of concern. This may involve a tummy tuck to address loose abdominal muscles and excess skin, a breast lift to restore sagging breasts, liposuction to remove stubborn pockets of fat, and sometimes breast augmentation to enhance breast volume and shape. The specific procedures included in a mommy makeover will be tailored to a patient’s unique needs and desired outcome.

Can I Breastfeed After A Mommy Makeover?

Breastfeeding after a mommy makeover is possible, but it will depend on the specific procedures performed and individual factors. If you are planning to have more children and want to breastfeed in the future, it is essential to discuss this with your plastic surgeon during your consultation. In some cases, certain breast surgery techniques may affect milk production or nipple sensation.

How Long Do The Results Of A Mommy Makeover Last?

The results of a mommy makeover can be long-lasting, especially if you maintain a healthy lifestyle and stable weight after the procedure. However, it is important to note that the natural aging process and future pregnancies can still impact the appearance of your body over time. It is essential to have realistic expectations and understand that maintenance procedures or touch-ups may be needed in the future.

Will A Cesarean Section Or Hysterectomy Affect My Mommy Makeover Outcome?

No. The incision for a tummy tuck is placed in the lower abdomen and excess skin protruding from the cesarean section or hysterectomy incision can be trimmed and the scar can be revised.

Can A Tummy Tuck Be Performed At The Same Time As A Hernia Repair Surgery?

Hernias are a common concern, especially in women who have given birth multiple times or have given birth to twins or triplets. A hernia can be surgically addressed at the same time as abdominoplasty is performed, allowing the patient to enjoy a streamlined recovery process. If you are suffering from a hernia but still wish to undergo a mommy makeover, speak with Dr. Korman during your private consultation in San Jose, Mountain View, Los Altos, or Carmel-by-the-Sea.
