What Is Microneedling?

Collagen is an all-important protein in the body responsible for the skin’s suppleness, radiance, and youthful support structure. When collagen gets depleted with the aging process, microneedling can trigger a wound-healing response in the skin that restores the production of this vital protein. The needles used with microneedling are ultra-thin, but they penetrate the skin just enough to create impressive cosmetic results, eradicating superficial concerns such as wrinkles, enlarged pores, stretch marks, blemishes, and scarring.

What Is PRP?

PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is a product derived from the patient’s blood. The blood is first drawn from the patient’s arm and then spun in a centrifuge to isolate the plasma from the red blood cells. PRP is packed with restorative growth factors that promote skin repair, regeneration, and renewal. While PRP can be used on its own, it is often paired with microneedling, which allows the substance to penetrate more deeply into the pores, igniting optimal cellular rejuvenation.

What Skin Concerns Can Be Addressed With PRP Microneedling?

Microneedling with PRP can be used safely and effectively for all skin types. Below are just a few of the concerns it can treat:

  • Acne scarring

How Is PRP Microneedling Performed?

Prior to your microneedling with PRP session, the skin will be numbed with a topical anesthetic, ensuring you are perfectly comfortable and at ease during treatment. Once you are ready, a small sample of your blood will be drawn and spun in a centrifuge to isolate the platelet-rich plasma. The PRP is then administered through a sterile syringe during the microneedling process, which involves a handheld device that is passed over the complexion to create collagen-inducing micro injuries. The micro channels created with microneedling are primed to absorb PRP, maximizing its efficacy. The entire treatment process takes about 30 minutes to complete.

What Happens After PRP Microneedling?

After PRP microneedling, the skin may feel tight and warm. Patients should avoid washing the skin for at least 24 hours, which guarantees all the PRP will be absorbed. A hyaluronic acid-based serum can be applied to the treated areas several times per day to promote hydration and encourage healing. Over the coming weeks and months, collagen production will ramp up, producing smoother, firmer skin and enhanced self-confidence. Dr. Korman recommends that you protect the skin using a broad-spectrum sunblock with an SPF of at least 50, as the complexion will be more sensitive to harmful UV rays after PRP microneedling.

Who Is A Good Candidate?

Healthy individuals seeking minimally invasive skincare treatments will find an impactful solution with PRP microneedling. If you are unhappy with the appearance of acne scars, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles and lines, stretch marks, or enlarged pores, PRP microneedling can revitalize your appearance, erasing superficial skin damage for a more glowing, radiant countenance. Dr. Korman will confirm your candidacy during your private consultation in San Jose, Carmel, Los Altos, or Mountain View.

PRP microneedling is not recommended for those with active acne, skin infections/disorders, or cold sores. Patients taking Accutane should also avoid PRP microneedling. PRP microneedling has not been tested for pregnant or nursing moms, therefore these individuals should refrain from undergoing the treatment. If it turns out you are not a candidate for PRP microneedling, Dr. Korman can offer an array of other cutting-edge skincare solutions to address your unique concerns.

Is microneedling with PRP better than microneedling by itself?

PRP injections and microneedling on their own are both powerful solutions for complexion concerns. However, by combining them, Dr. Korman is able to produce exponentially more impressive anti-aging results. While microneedling encourages the production of collagen, PRP adds cellular regeneration and repair into the mix, optimizing results.

How long do results with PRP microneedling last?

Results after a single PRP microneedling session can typically last 3-5 months. However, with continued maintenance visits, patients can enjoy a rejuvenated complexion year-round.

How often should you undergo PRP microneedling?

It is safe to undergo PRP microneedling once a month. Allowing for four full weeks of collagen renewal between sessions is ideal. While some patients can achieve their desired results in a single appointment, most will benefit from undergoing 3-5 sessions. Dr. Korman will create a personalized treatment plan for you after analyzing your skin during your private consultation.

Can I wear makeup after PRP microneedling?

After microneedling with PRP, patients should avoid wearing cosmetics for at least 24 hours. Skincare products should also be avoided for the first few days unless specifically approved by Dr. Korman.

Can I exercise after PRP microneedling?

PRP microneedling comes with minimal downtime, so it is perfectly fine for patients to resume normal activities once the procedure is complete. However, it is suggested to wait at least 12 hours before working out at the gym. Dr. Korman will provide detailed aftercare instructions for you after your treatment.
